Cannabidiol is one of the most studied cannabinoids alongside THC, the psychoactive substance in Cannabis. Also known as CBD, the active ingredient has been used to treat various diseases, from the most serious, such as Dravet syndrome and CDKL5, through chronic pain and anxiety to insomnia and mood control. In this article we will understand what CBD is and what it is for.
The substance gained prominence in the world from the story of little Charlotte Figi, an American child who suffered from refractory epilepsy due to Dravet Syndrome. She only got quality of life after starting treatment with a cannabis oil rich in cannabidiol. His journey became a documentary on CNN and took over the world.
In Brazil, the CBD was also a “gateway” for the import of cannabis-based products for therapeutic purposes. In 2014, Katiele Fisher and her husband Norberto Fisher obtained in court the right to import cannabidiol to treat their daughter Anny’s severe epilepsy, caused by the CDKL5 syndrome.
Despite the wide dissemination of successful cases in the treatment with CBD being recent, the substance has been studied for many years, having among the greatest researchers in the world a Brazilian, the psychopharmacologist Elisaldo Carlini. Carlini has studied the effects of psychotropic drugs for over 50 years.
Head of Cebrid (Brazilian Center for Information on Psychotropic Drugs) and as professor emeritus at the Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM/Unifesp) – São Paulo Campus, Carlini and his team were responsible for the first studies published in the world on the beneficial effect of cannabidiol in adults with epilepsy.
But after all, what is cannabidiol?
The properties of cannabidiol give it the potential:
The substance acts directly on the endocannabinoid system, functioning as a modulator capable of regulating what is unregulated in the body, regardless of the cause of the imbalance. Therefore, the substance takes on the appearance of a “wild card”.
The main actions controlled by the endocannabinoid system, in short, are relaxing, eating, sleeping, forgetting and protecting.
This system is responsible for regulating the neurological part of the human body and influencing a series of physiological processes, such as pain, memory and immune and allergic reactions.
The endocannabinoid system was discovered less than 30 years ago and has been shown to be tightly regulated by plant-derived cannabinoids such as cannabidiol.
In Brazil, the CBD has been part of list C1 of the Drug Law annex since January 2015, that is, it is related to substances for authorized use under special control.
Among the diseases and conditions that can be treated with CBD are:
• Inflammations, arthritis in general
• Alzheimer, Parkinson, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Schizophrenia
• Diabetes, obesity
• Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, PTSD
• Atherosclerosis, arrhythmia
• Acne, dermatitis, psoriasis
• Cancer (under study)
• Rare deseases
• Effects of chemotherapy
Cannabidiol for athletes
In addition to treating diseases, disorders and disorders, CBD has also been used by athletes to reduce the impacts of the load of stress that their bodies are subjected to during sports practices.
In search of better sports recovery and safer pain relief, athletes such as skateboarder and greatest medalist in X Games history, Bob Burnquist saw the CBD as a great ally. Watch here an interview between the athlete and Dr. Cannabis.
One of the main doubts regarding the CBD is whether it promotes highs, whether it is ‘cheap’, like the THC. And the answer is no. This reaction is promoted by the cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, THC. Drowsiness is one of the most reported side effects in patients using cannabidiol.
